Schools of Almon
Regina School - District #1
The first Regina School Dist. #1, in the Town of Almon was built in the woods, in the NE 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Section 26, away from the main roads, because that was the middle of the District. The Town of Almon was being heavily logged in 1893 when this school was built and there was a railroad spur built into the woods to haul the logs to market.
There was a narrow road leading almost up to the school, but most pupils felt it was closer walking along the tracks and then taking a narrow path to the school. The school was completely surrounded by woods. This school was closed in 1912 when the new Dist. #1, Brick School was built at N8096 Regina Road.
Former Hennig School - District #2
Hennig School, Town of Almon District #2 closed in May 1963 and the building is now a private residence. Rod Zeinert attended Hennig School the last year of its existence. The School was located at N7744 Old Q Road, One and one-half miles South of Hennig Lake. The School bell was sold at auction and was purchased by Ellen Hennig’s son, Charles O. Hennig and is now at his home in Kirkland Washington.
This frame building was located at the SW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of Section 28, in the Town of Almon, about one and one-half miles South of Hennig Lake. A present day address would be N7744 Old Highway Q. This building was replaced with a new brick schoolhouse in 1910.
The Pukall Sawmill in Shepley, Wisconsin was founded around 1908 by Gottfried Pukall. About the same time, whether by providence or by lobbying, the Chicago and Northwestern railroad from Green Bay to Eland was built right on the edge of Gottfried’s property. Taking advantage of the new traffic on his doorstep, Gottfried, now in his mid-60’s, built a saloon called “The Senator”, a boarding house and a general store. This pretty much founded the new town of Shepley.
Leiskau School - District #3
Leiskau School was built in 1904 for a cost of $1,800 and was located in the NW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 8, in the Town of Almon, on County Highway “N” near Maple Road. The current address would at W16263. The Brick Building has since been torn down and a private residence has been built there.

Kolpack Log School - District #4
The first School District organized in the Town of Almon was Kolpack School, organized on April 22, 1873 and located 4 miles north of Bowler at what is now N9106 Kolpack Road in the SW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Section 12. It would become known as District #4. The log school gradually deteriorated and a new school would be built on the same grounds in 1900.
Kolpack School’s log building was replaced with this new frame structure in 1900. The new schoolhouse was one of the largest school buildings in Shawano County at the time. It was well finished and it was provided with a large bell that could be heard distinctly in any part of the district.
Kolpack School closed in May of 1955.
